George’s role in the Home Furnishing & Retail Design team was a combination of planning, project management, and hands on implementation, all with the overarching aim of producing a constant stream of vitality throughout the store. The collection was to be presented using visual merchandising techniques based on an in-depth understanding of the IKEA concept and knowledge of the local market.
The collection was to be featured in the “Launch Area”, which within an IKEA store is an essential activation zone, being the first display and impression communicated to the customers in the main showroom.
George considered the range’s simplicity and colour scheme when planning the space, drawing inspiration from the spectrum of the materials used throughout the collection itself - blends of wood, metal and fabrics toned with shades of brown, grey and black. Ypperlig epitomises minimalism and George considered whilst planning with the completed display neatly aligning with the “beauty out of basics” motto.

YPPERLIG

Taking the concept of affordable living forward, in October 2017 IKEA collaborated with the Danish design company HAY, releasing a collection “YPPERLIG: THE BEAUTY OF BASICS” (Ypperlig, loosely translates to “superb” in the Norwegian language). With a philosophy rooted in innovation, Co-Founders and Creative Directors of HAY, Mette and Rolf, create furniture characterised by blending sophistication and simplicity. Known for crafting straightforward, functional and aesthetically pleasing products, HAY’s design language corresponded with IKEA's design philosophy.
